Zurich is built

"Zurich is built" was the credo of Zurich's Director of Construction in the 1990s. It was one of the cornerstones for new planning instruments that served as a model for the rest of Switzerland. Cooperative planning enables Zurich, as Switzerland's largest city, to prioritize quality and sustainability even in its development areas. Non-profit housing construction has a long tradition in Zurich and is currently the most active sector in Switzerland. This successful approach is based on numerous architectural competitions held by the city, cooperatives, and private investors.
